She was about to leave, but he stopped her by touching her hand lightly, giving her his 'I don't want you to go but know you have to, yet I'd wish you to stay'- look. He would never, never phrase it, and she would never, never act upon to those unspoken words, knowing that she had to go back to Soul Society. Her place was at her father's side, not at his.
“When will you come back here?”
Her face went blank, and the Quincy sighed in anticipation of her words. He knew what she was about to say. They did this every time she left, and it had become an unchangeable ritual of departure.
“I don't know, but as soon as I can manage.” And she gave him this small, sad smile that could be seen so very seldom and nearly never by anyone but him. Then she leaned forward and kissed him, a short brush of her lips against his. “As soon as my duties allow me to.”
He nodded and once again wished that damn arrancar would have killed Mayuri; wished once again that Nemu's heart were free, that she were free. That he could hold her, that her home could be their home.
He had realized that she wouldn't leave her squad; but visiting her there was impossible to him as long as there was this mad captain, and living there even more.... Not that he particularly wanted to be in this shinigami place... but... She would never join him in the living world. And it had become very lonely since most of his friends and comrades had died or settled down in Soul Society. There had been someone, one single person, who had been able to understand his dilemma, to be in love with someone whose place one couldn't get to. But both Ulquiorra and Orihime were long dead. And Orihime, having heard of her beloved one's death, had chosen the only way she could forget about him.
One more grave to visit, one more name to count down when speaking of the winter war's losses.
One more person Ishida had never wanted to lose lost.
He blinked. That reminded him...
“Nemu?”
She looked back questioningly, while the senkaimon in front of her opened.
“It's because of Yuzu...”
“How is she?” There was more than the plain professional interest in the girl's voice. Of course, the condition of the second and only left time-warping healer was of interest to the whole Seireitei, even more so to the 12th squad. But this girl was the reason that Nemu had learned how to be friends with people at all. The news of the girl's lover's death had been shocking to her nearly as much as they were to Yuzu.
“It's really hard to tell. I'm visiting her about every day now, and we have had some talks about me moving in the Kurosaki's house.”
“Your father?”
He coughed a sharp laugh. “Do you really think I asked him?”
There was no need to answer this rhetorical question, and Uryuu continued.
“But I think she needs to talk to someone else but me... I wanted to ask you if you'd pay her a visit, but...” And she knew he was sad because he had been so selfish to not make her go to the brown haired girl's place but to stay with him the few hours she could afford. And she knew, knew guiltily, that she was happy he had been so. She just didn't know how to handle her mourning friend. Didn't know what to say, what not to say, what to do, what not to do.
She had avoided Yuzu ever since that very day.
Just because she feared to make things worse.
Just because she knew she would feel awkward. Because she didn't think that she would be consumed so much by her lovers death... She didn't think she would be able to really mourn.
Just because she didn't know how to feel. Really feel. Rightly feel.
“I could ask Rikichi...”
Uryuu nodded slowly and smirked sadly. “He'll understand her feelings better that we...”
There were so many that would, lately...
“And Hanatarou? Those two used to get along very well...”
“Her sister?”
“Is she back from Hueco Mundo?”
“Not yet.”
“When,” and the ever-implied “if” those words demanded echoed through their minds “she comes back, please ask her as well.”
“I'll do.” She stepped through the now fully opened senkaimon. “See you.”
He nodded. “Bye.” And, when the gate had already closed, he added a soundless “I love you.” There was no need for her to hear it.
Because just as much as he hoped she would love him back as much as Yuzu had loved, and still did, Rin, he didn't want her to be as sad and hopeless when he would eventually die. Because he knew he would. Maybe sooner, maybe later.
But this war wasn't something he could possibly stay away from forever. And being a part of it meant to die. Maybe sooner, maybe later.
And she would too, eventually.
And he doubted he would be as strong as Yuzu. Strong enough to never forget yet go on and live up to the life she and Rin had always dreamed of.
Which he knew the girl would do, eventually.
